Subject: Earth Crayons & Earth Paints

Date: Thu Jan 11 16:10

Author: Tonya (tonyamb@bellsouth.net)

Create crayons & paint from the earth (soil).

To make EARTH CRAYONS:
--2 ounces beeswax
--2 oz. parafin
--6 tsp. turpentine
--3-5 ounces of natural pigment (refer to earth paints)
--pan to melt wax
--spoon to stir
--aluminum foil
--cupcake cups
--cupcake or muffin pan
--stove or heat source

Line the cupcake pan with aluminum foil & place paper cupcake cups into pan.
Melt wax & parafin in pan over low heat. Remove from heat. Slowly add turpentine & dry earth pigment to warm wax mixture; stir all ingredients until mixed.
Pour warm mixture into cupcake cups & let cool. Remove crayons when cool & use your earth crayons!

To make EARTH PAINT:
--earth (dirt/soil)
--pans
--newspaper
--rolling pin or hammer
--plastic storage bags
--sieve or sifter (the "crank" kind is ideal)
--bowl
--tablespoon
--butter or plastic knife
--water
--paper
--paintbrush
--jars with lids

Gather pans of soil and dirt. Soil comes in many colors from brick red to black.

Spread the dirt on newspaper & let it dry thoroughly. Placed dried earth into a doubled plastic bag. Crush with a rolling pin or hammer.
Pour crushed dirt into sieve or sifter with a bowl underneath the sifter. "Strain" particles of earth through the sifter, saving only the smallest pieces in a bowl.
Use the tablespoon to gather some earth particles from the bowl & place on a hard surface.
Add water, a few drops at a time, and mix with butter or plastic knife until smooth like paint.

Dip paint brush into earth paint as needed. Be creative! Store dry earth paints labeled in jars with lids.

Variations:
--Try painting on wood, stone or the smooth inside of a piece of bark.

--Paint on newspaper, cardboard, grocery sacks or paper scraps.
