Here are a few tips to help you when you want to garden with the kids.
--A picture is worth a 1,000 words. Never tell kids something you could show them. --Young kids have a very short attention span. Make sure that you have lots of options available so they can get started immediately and stay busy. They LOVE TO DIG HOLES! --Instant gratification helps! Plant radishes even if you don't like them---they come up in 3-4 days. --Growing their own vegetables will generally get kids to try eating things they otherwise wouldn't. --Getting dirty is an integral part of growing up! --Be a good role model. --When giving out supplies to several kids, try to keep seeds, plants, tools, etc. as similar as possible to avoid fussing & fighting. --After an activity, do something to reinforce what everyone has learned. Many kids who won't talk in a large group will often speak easily in a small group. --Try pairing older kids with younger ones. Try to add responsibility & ownership to projects.
Here's a list of plants that are fun for kids to plant & watch grow.
--morning glories --pansies --Johnny jump ups --nasturtiums --snapdragons --radishes --cleome --sunflowers --potatoes --strawflowers --zinnias --Mexican hat --blacket flower --lamb's ear --herbs: mint (apple & chocolate), lemon grass, cilantro, garlic, basil, oregano
Butterfly attracting plants: butterfly weed, salvia, monarga
